Kovalainen looking forward to Russian demonstration

July 3rd, 2009

Heikki Kovalainen is particularly looking forward to an upcoming trip to Russia as part of a Formula One demonstration in the country.

The Finn is to demonstrate a World Championship-winning Vodafone McLaren Mercedes around the perimeter of the Kremlin on July 19th, with thousands of fans expected to be in attendance to watch the performance.

Kovalainen said: "I’m really looking forward to the demonstration in Russia.

"Moscow is one of the world’s most magnificent cities and this opportunity to showcase Formula One machinery to so many people, and in such an amazing place, is an incredible opportunity."

Meanwhile, earlier this year talks were announced about the possibility of a Russian Grand Prix being added to the Formula One calendar for the 2010 season.

Reports suggest that the race will take place near St Petersburg on a purpose-built track that is yet to be constructed.

The next race of the present season is the German Grand Prix which is set to take place on July 12th at the Nurburgring.

Performance and driving dynamics combined with new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG

July 3rd, 2009

Motorists looking for a car that combines outstanding performance with exhilarating driving dynamics may want to buy the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG.

The distinguishing feature of the sports saloon over other vehicles in the E-Class range is the inclusion of an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, while the vehicle also comes with the newly-developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension.

This engine will allow motorists to accelerate to 62 miles per hour in a rapid 4.5 seconds, while an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour can be reached.

Meanwhile, a decision to implement certain fuel-efficiency measures has helped the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG to reduce its fuel consumption by 12 per cent.

A further new development is the fitting of a speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering system, offering drivers more direct responsiveness and improved precision.

Motorists looking for additional sporty elements to their vehicle could also opt for some add-ons such as an AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid or a roller blind for the rear window.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz reveals that "AMG bodystyling accentuates the dynamic external lines with front and rear aprons and two twin chrome exhausts".

Driving in the wind made easier by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class

July 2nd, 2009

The dilemma of trying to keep a car on course when it is hit by a gust of wind is a problem that faces many motorists, but not those who buy the top-of-the pile version of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it has been revealed.

Reviewing the S-Class for the Daily Telegraph, Stuart Birch remarks that the vehicle, which is to hit the market later this year, will be equipped with a crosswind stabilisation system.

The system works when motorists are travelling at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour and can detect when a strong wind is coming in 50 milliseconds, while taking the same time to make the relevant adjustments.

Motorists driving the Mercedes-Benz S600 can benefit from the technology as standard, with electronic stability control sensors detecting a gust and then informing other elements of the car of the necessary adaptations to be carried out.

Mr Birch visited a Mercedes-Benz test centre to see the technology in action and revealed that the "need for driver correction was minimal and passenger discomfort equally small".

Among the standard equipment that comes automatically with all S-Class models are a heated windscreen wash system, a remote boot release, tinted glass and a glasses storage compartment.

Hamilton hoping for steady build up of points

July 2nd, 2009

Lewis Hamilton has revealed that it will take a strong effort from the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team if he is to finish in the top five of the drivers’ standings this season.

The reigning World Champion currently sits in 11th in the standings after accruing nine points from the eight races that have taken place this season to date.

However, with nine races still remaining there is still plenty to play for and Hamilton is hopeful that a steady stream of points will begin to materialise, starting at the German Grand Prix on July 12th.

Hamilton said in an interview with Autosport: "I think I’m 11th in the championship right now, which is new for us. With the way we’re going, not scoring any points, that’s kind of where we’re going to be.

"Bit by bit, if we can begin to start scoring, one, two, three more points per race, then slowly we will climb back up the standings."

However, he added that a top five position may be too tough to expect because of the current lack of speed present in his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

Hamilton won the German Grand Prix last season after beginning the race from pole position.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class is ’sexy and stylish’

July 2nd, 2009

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a vehicle that is properly built and is one of the most "sexy and stylish" four-door saloons available on the market, according to Richard Hammond.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, the Top Gear presenter stated that "if it was the last car you could own you’d be well-chuffed to live with it until you fell off your twig".

The car tested by Hammond was a black Mercedes-Benz E250 with a sports trim and came with a new 2.2-litre diesel engine with four cylinders and two turbochargers.

This engine allows the car to accelerate to 62 miles per hour from still in 7.2 seconds, although Hammond commented that the feeling within the car is that the speed is being achieved much faster.

Meanwhile, drivers can benefit from being able to achieve 47.1 miles per gallon of fuel, while the E-Class also comes equipped with a large amount of technology.

Hammond specifically pointed out the active bonnet system, with the car’s bonnet being raised automatically by 50 millimetres if an impending impact is detected.

Other safety technologies include Attention Assist, which warns a driver if it appears they are falling asleep behind the wheel.

Di Resta content with two points after difficult Norisring weekend

July 1st, 2009

Although still awaiting his first podium finish of the new DTM season, another points-scoring result in the third race of the campaign at Norisring ensured that Paul Di Resta remains fully involved in the championship picture.

The 2009 AMG Mercedes C-Class driver began the season with fourth and fifth place finishes and this was followed up with a seventh at Norisring.

A timing mistake during qualifying meant that the Scot only set the tenth fastest time, with a penalty relegating him another five positions.

However, over the 80 laps Di Resta made some solid progress through the field in front of the 132,000 spectators to pick up what could prove to be a valuable two points.

He said: "After starting 15th on the grid the seventh-place finish is not too bad.

"Without the relegation it has been a difficult weekend for me and so I am still satisfied to have scored two points."

Di Resta now sits six points behind the DTM Championship leader, with the next race scheduled to take place at Zandvoort in The Netherlands on July 17th.

Still plenty to work towards for Hamilton in 2009

July 1st, 2009

Lewis Hamilton believes that all is not lost in the current Formula One season as the remaining races need to be used to ensure that he has a car to challenge for the World Championship again next season.

Hamilton has struggled for much of the present campaign with a best finish of fourth, while the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team has scored only 13 points in the eight races that have taken place so far this season.

However, although he is out of the title picture, Hamilton has revealed that his team still have plenty to work towards.

He commented when talking to Autosport: "When I’m talking about next year, we have a tough job on our hands and we have a lot of pressure on our hands.

"We have to work as a team to make sure we have the best car and when we get there next year we want to be winning every race, so that’s what we’re all working for and that’s what we are all hopeful for."

Hamilton was awarded an MBE by the Queen in the 2009 New Years Honours List and remarked that the experience was one of the most "overwhelming" of his life.

Long pit stop sees Paffett finish fifth at Norisring

June 30th, 2009

Gary Paffett was left relatively pleased with fifth place at Norisring after a lengthy second pit stop ended his hopes of finishing on the podium.

The Mercedes-Benz driver came into the third stop on the DTM calendar in good form having won the previous race at the EuroSpeedway.

Paffett qualified in fifth spot in his AMG Mercedes C-Class at Norisring but failed to make any significant progress during the 80 laps as he looked to build on prior successes at the circuit in both 2004 and 2005.

He said afterwards: “What a tough race. I drove consistently in fourth place; however, due to the lengthy second pit stop I lost this position.

“All drivers were very close together today, so I’m still satisfied to have scored four points.”

The result sees Paffett fall a further point away from top spot in the overall DTM standings, with him now being three points off the lead.

Mercedes-Benz teammate Jamie Green won the race, ensuring that the manufacturer was victorious at the circuit for the seventh straight year.

Milestones reached at Mercedes-Benz plant on A-Class and B-Class models

June 29th, 2009

Two production milestones have been reached at the Mercedes-Benz plant at Rastatt, with motorists in Germany and Great Britain to take deliveries of the landmark vehicles.

The 750,000th new-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the 500,000th B-Class are set to be delivered from the plant in June, proving that there is still significant interest from motorists in the vehicles.

Dr Klaus Maier, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "The A and B-Class continue to be very popular with our customers – you only have to look at their top ranking in the premium compact vehicle segment.

"At the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz also introduced the B-Class in China. It is proving outstandingly popular with Chinese customers and has already far exceeded our expectations."

Meanwhile, strong recent demand across Europe from the UK, Italy, Germany and France for vehicles from the plant has meant that it will continue to operate at full capacity until September.

The production team at the plant produce around 1,000 vehicles every day.

Among the benefits of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is that rear-seat passengers can profit from a raised seating position to ensure that they receive generous amounts of legroom.
