David Strettle savours Mercedes-Benz award
Harlequins winger David Strettle has enjoyed one of the most spectacular weeks in his rugby union career, beginning with a prestigious award sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.
Strettle scooped the Professional Rugby Players’ Association (PRA) Mercedes-Benz Young Player of the Year, in acknowledgement of a number of stunning performances for the Quins and his contribution to the international setup.
The rapid 23-year-old fought off competition from the likes of Anthony Allen, Toby Flood, Shane Geraghty and Tom Rees, all of whom have excelled for their clubs this season.
“Initially, I was just really pleased to be nominated alongside some great young players,” Strettle said.
“Then to have won the award was a bit of a shock and just a brilliant feeling. I am looking forward to trying to retain my place in the Quins side next year and hopefully be involved on the international stage again.”
It is an ambition Strettle seems certain to fulfil, having been selected in the England squad for the tour of South Africa later this month.
Strettle’s rise to prominence was also recognised by Sky Sports this week, when he was named in the Sky Sports Dream Team alongside team-mate Mike Brown. The team also included Harry Ellis, Marco Bortolami, Glen Jackson, Seilala Mapusua and Toby Flood.
Previous winners of the PRA Mercedes-Benz Young Player of the Year award include Tom Varndell and Harry Ellis.
