Tennis hopefuls battle for Mercedes-Benz Amateur title
The Mercedes-Benz Amateur Tennis Classic begins in Kingston, Jamaica tomorrow, seeing the Caribbean’s finest amateurs lock horns.
The tournament is part of the Llocket McGregor Tennis Series and takes place at the capital’s Liguanea Club until May 19th.
As many as 200 amateur tennis players are expected to take part in the competition, which comprises four men’s classes and one women’s class.
Mercedes-Benz is a major sponsor of tennis events the world over, from amateur competitions such as this to some of the most prestigious competitions on the ATP tour.
Jamaica is an up-and-coming tennis playing nation, which competed in its first David Cup in 1988.
In the women’s competition, current champion Sasha Hanna is expected to triumph, as her nearest rival, Danielle Montieth, is not due to take part.
In the premier men’s class, however, things are much more open.
Dane Vernon is the title-holder and top seed, but second and third seeds Yusuf Migoko and Dwayne Pagon are currently on good form.
