Alonso supports young go-karters
Formula 1 champion and current season leader Fernando Alonso went back to his roots this week at the Vodafone Spain Go-Karting Challenge.
The Spanish Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver started the race and presented the prizes to the ten young participants in the race, which took place at the Kartodrom Catalunya.
He also gave tips to the young racers and answered their questions, as well as driving a few laps of the Kartodrom himself.
Alonso began his illustrious racing career in go-karting, famously inheriting a go-kart from his enthusiast father at the age of three and winning his first competition in 1988.
He said: “I hope that the time we spent together and the advice that I have given them has given them encouragement to carry on striving in what is a difficult sport, and go on to realise their dreams.”
The winner was Pedro Hiltbrand from Palafolls, Barcelona - who was delighted to be given an unexpected prize as well as the trophy. The F1 champion announced that Pedro would also receive a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team garage tour at the Cataluna racetrack.
The race was sponsored by team partner Vodafone and the Catalan Motoring Federation.
