Top spot for Vodafone Mclaren Mercedes after successful weekend

After an impressive 14-point haul at last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are sitting at the top of the 2007 Construction Championship.

The team’s drivers - Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso - finished the race in second and third position, collecting 14 points for their team.

Even though Felipe Massa, driving for Ferrari, won the race, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes came away from Spain having extended its lead at the top of the constructor’s table by nine points.

One of the reasons that Vodafone Mclaren Mercedes have started the season so strongly is the performance of 22-year-old Hamilton.

Three seconds and a third have seen the youngster climb to the number one spot ahead of team-mate and last year’s overall winner Fernando Alonso.

Despite this being Hamilton’s first Formula 1 season, he is already thinking about the possibility of taking the World Championship later this year.

Speaking after this weekend’s race, Hamilton said: “If I keep scoring points and the team remain competitive and consistent then anything is possible.

“It’s just an amazing feeling. I don’t want to make any predictions and I’m happy to just keep on doing this and scoring points and let’s see what happens.”

The next stop in the Formula 1 calendar is in Monaco on May 27th.
