Kenyan runner eyes second Mercedes-Benz
Laban Rotich, one of Kenya’s most extraordinary middle-distance runners, will next month compete in Canada in search of his second new Mercedes-Benz in as many years.
The 38-year-old athlete, who once ran a mile in 3:47.65, picked up a stunning Mercedes-Benz Saloon last year when he fought off competition from an exceptionally tough field. He will be looking for a repeat performance on June 16th.
The Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile has been a hugely successful event for the veteran competitor. He also won the race in 2005, beating the four minute mark with a time of 3:58.08.
Held at the Galt Collegiate Institute, Cambridge, the race is one of the highlights of the season and Rotich’s decision to take part once again has only added extra spice to the occasion.
Commemorating the anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister’s first sub-four minute mile at Oxford University, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile will welcome hundreds of athletes from four generations, but only a handful can realistically expect to drive away in a new car.
One of those who may well be in with a chance is Shedrack Korir - Laban Rotich’s younger brother - who has already run the equivalent of a 3:50 mile this year.
It promises to be an intriguing contest and the prospect of a spectacular new Mercedes-Benz can only intensify the competition among the frontrunners.
