Brooklands prepares for Opening Cavalcade
June 13th, 2007At 2pm on Sunday, June 17th, the Brooklands Centenary Festival will run a breathtaking re-enactment of the 1907 Official Opening Cavalcade.
A full lap of the protected parts of Brooklands will be completed for the first time in almost 60 years, exactly 100 years after the original cavalcade took place.
The celebrated Railway Straight, which runs alongside the London to Southampton railway, has been re-opened for the first time in 50 years, as have various sections of the Campbell Circuit.
Exquisite classic cars dating back to 1907 will take part in the cavalcade and many of these were present at the opening ceremony.
They will proceed anti-clockwise from the clubhouse at the Brooklands Museum and cross the River Wey into Mercedes-Benz World. The cars will then re-join the original track on the Railway Straight, as enthusiasts take in the sights and sounds of these celebrated vehicles.
Allan Winn, director at Brooklands Museum, said: "Despite having to miss out the missing parts of the circuit, the cavalcade will drive on more of the track than has been possible at any time since it closed in 1939.
"It will be a magnificent tribute to the centenary of Brooklands, with many original cars on the original circuit, exactly 100 years on from the original opening of Brooklands."
This weekend’s extravaganza will also include a display of the 2006 Team McLaren Mercedes MP4-21 car, as well as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, showcased by DTM driver Susie Stoddart.
Tickets for the Centenary Festival can be booked by calling 0870 850 6639 or visiting the Brooklands Centenary Festival website.
