Mercedes-Benz plans to create fuel cell cars of the future

Mercedes-Benz is looking to create a range of mass produced fuel cell cars with production to start in 2010.

Speaking at the Geneva Motorshow, Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Mercedes-Benz, said the firm was planning to introduce low level production of the fuel cell vehicles for the B-Class but said the firm was "very, very serious" about mass producing fuel cells.

By 2014-15 Dr Zetsche expects economically viable fuel-cell models to be in production with 100,000 models being produced a year.

But according to the Times, Dr Zetsche said that a clear infrastructure must be in place to support the new technology and developing it in parallel is a necessity.

He also revealed that he expects the DIESOTTO diesel-petrol convergence engine to reach production by 2015.

Mercedes-Benz is also launching the new-generation SL at the show which has been described by Dr Zetsche as a true "design icon".

Four different engine variants can be included in the new model which develops more output at lower fuel consumption.
