Mercedes ‘leads the way on fuel economy’

Mercedes vans are leading the way in fuel economy, according to Steve Bridge, van sales and marketing director for Mercedes-Benz.

Improvements in fuel efficiency will "add to the bottom line of any business," the expert told Transport News Network.

The comments follow Mercedes’ recent success in the MPG Marathon, where they took the top two places in the category of medium-sized vans at the AA/ALD.

The winner, a Vito 109CDI, entered by Northgate plc returned the highest figure ever recorded by the panel in an MPG Marathon, at 55.04pmg while the runner up, was Mercedes’ entrance, a Vito 111CDI that scored 54.54mpg.

Deploying defensive tactics was crucial to win the race, according to winning driver Steve Johnson of Drive & Survive.

"Maintaining concentration, observation and anticipation, particularly by timing my arrival at junctions to avoid stopping, meant I could maintain a fairly even pace," he said.

Meanwhile a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter already won the van leg of the 2007 AA/ALD MPG Marathon, recording a cost per tonne mile of 14.85 pence in the race which took place between Basingstoke and Torquay on Britain’s south coast.
