Mercedes-Benz’ myCOMAND system passes on-road test
October 12th, 2009Mercedes-Benz’ fully internet-based infotainment system has passed its first on-road test thanks to the use of a higher bandwidth wireless connection.
The myCOMAND system was run on a 4G wireless high-speed network during the Nokia Siemens Networks Solutions Forum 2009 in Munich and achieved much-improved results compared with previous tests.
Due to the upgrade from lower-bandwidth connections, many of the myCOMAND features ran smoother, while audio proved to be of a higher quality and screens loaded faster.
The capabilities of the system allow motorists to view maps showing the most up-to-date travel information, listen to radio stations from all over the world and see which hotels and venues are close by.
Johann Jungwirth, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Research and Advanced Engineering Lab in Palo Alto, California, explained that the developments have moved infotainment systems along from what is currently on the market.
He said: "In the areas of both information and entertainment, the entirely internet-based solution affords decisive advantages over traditional systems found in today’s vehicles."
Mercedes-Benz first launched the research project for the myCOMAND system in 2008 and debuted the product at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year.
