Brooklands Festival welcoming classic cars

Friday, June 6th, 2008

The Brooklands Motoring Festival features many classic cars but visitors to the prestigious show will no doubt want to cast their eyes on the Mercedes-Benz SSK.

Hosted by Mercedes-Benz World and Brooklands Museum, the festival will see several classic motor cars compete in ‘The Double Twelve’.

This unique Concours D’Elegance will give visitors a chance to see the cars put through their paces over a series of difficult tests.

Categories include Millie Miglia, RAC Rally Class, post-War grand Touring class and post-War Spirit of Brooklands class.

A panel of experts will judge the performance of the cars across the categories as the vehicles take to the test areas of the Brooklands circuit and Mercedes-Benz World.

Points are awarded for each test and will be added to give an overall score to ensure that the winner is the best combination of a driver and top-class vehicle.

Visitors can also expect appearances from Sir Stirling Moss, Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen.

For more information check the events page of the Mercedes-Benz World website.

Brooklands Festival to get F1 treat

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen will drive Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One cars at the Brooklands Motoring Festival this June.

Taking place on June 28th and 29th, the festival will see the drivers make several appearances in the car as they demonstrate their talents on the handling circuits at Mercedes-Benz World.

In a warm up to the British Grand Prix the following weekend, Hamilton said the event was a great chance to appreciate the "support of your home crowd".

Kovalainen is delighted to be taking part in the event at what he described as the "birthplace of motor-racing".

"It is the opportunity of a lifetime to follow in the footsteps of many racing legends where so many records were made and broken," he explained.

Along with the Formula One cars, the weekend has plenty of other attractions including performances from the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows Display Team and a Blue Eagles Helicopter Display.

Another main event is the prestigious Double Twelve competition which sees competitors challenge their cars in a number of driving tests.

Mille Miglia Storica set to begin

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Today (Thursday) is the beginning of the 2008 Mille Miglia Storica, a competition long associated with Mercedes-Benz.

While the event started off as a road race, it has since evolved into an endurance rally and over the years Mercedes-Benz has entered many vehicles including one driven by Sir Stirling Moss.

This year, Mercedes-Benz is a main sponsor of the Mille Miglia bringing 120 years of the brand’s experience to the event.

While Stirling Moss won the event in 1955 by setting a record time, Mercedes-Benz also had a victorious driver in 1931 when Rudolf Caracciola won the event.

Since then there have been numerous second places and class victories in the historic event.

Racing and rally drivers competing in the event need certain qualities in the performance of their cars as well as the comfort necessary for an endurance race.

Mercedes-Benz has constantly lived up to the performance, safety, comfort and value retention qualities expected of good cars.

Sir Stirling Moss will be present at the Double Twelve event at Mercedes-Benz World.

CLC, SLK and SLR to appear at Company Car Action

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Mercedes-Benz is set to feature several key models at the Company Car Action event to be held at Millbrook Proving Ground.

The event, which takes place on June 17th through to the 19th, sees the automaker aim its Mercedes-Benz cars at fleet managers looking to kit out their firms.

Arriving at the show will be the new C-Class estate, the Mercedes-Benz CLC as well as the SLK and SL roadsters.

"The main focus for Mercedes-Benz at Company Car in Action will be to introduce the brand new C-Class estate and CLC," a spokesman told fleetnews.co.uk.

Drivers will get the chance to test out some of the luxury models on a special circuit designed for the event and they will also be able to learn about the safety and environmental issues behind the cars on show.

With technologies such as PRE-SAFE, an anticipatory accident protection system, Mercedes-Benz cars are some of the safest on the road.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon was also awarded a Euro NCAP five star rating for adults.

Mercedes-Benz World at the British International Motor Show again

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

In 2006, Mercedes-Benz used its stand at the British International Motor Show to launch Mercedes-Benz World and in 2008 the experience will feature again.

Dubbed by many as the "motor show every day of the year", Mercedes-Benz World has seen over 440,000 guests pass through its doors since it was opened in October 2006.

Over 15,000 children have enjoyed their first taste of driving thanks to the Kid’s Driving Experiences programmes which allow kids to drive in a brand new Mercedes-Benz on the original surface of the hallowed Brooklands Circuit - if they’re tall enough to reach the pedals.

Visitors to the 2008’s motorshow will be able to see another stand for Mercedes-Benz World and Gordon Freshwater, corporate events manager at Mercedes-Benz UK wants to see as many people at the event as possible.

"But if they can’t make it to London, people can see our latest models and services at their local retailer. As well as Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands we’ve over 150 state-of-the-art facilities all over the country, and of course they’re open year-round," he added.

Sugababes and McFly to head Brooklands gig

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

The Sugababes and McFly will headline a massive concert at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands on July 12th.

The three-piece girl band have had a number one album, ‘Changes’, this year while McFly topped the charts for the first time in 2004 before recording a Greatest Hits album last year.

Fans of music and Mercedes-Benz will get the ultimate prize when both bands perform on stage for the July gig.

Peter O’Halloran, managing director of Mercedes-Benz World, said: "We are looking forward to welcoming both McFly and the Sugababes to Mercedes-Benz World.

"We are especially pleased that this concert will attract a younger audience which, combined with Elton John appearing on both the Friday and Sunday night, means we will see our widest-ranging audiences to date," he added.

Tom Fletcher from McFly said he was delighted to be playing at a "brilliant" venue alongside the Sugababes.

The show is in addition to two previous dates where Elton John will perform.

Kovalainen to make Brooklands Festival

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Heikki Kovalainen will join Sir Stirling Moss and Lewis Hamilton at the Brooklands Motoring Festival this year.

The 26-year-old is the latest recruit to the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One team and will be turning out at the event on the weekend of June 28th to 29th.

Peter O’Halloran, managing director of Mercedes-Benz World, said: "Brooklands is the home of motor-racing as we know it today and, in particular, of the British Grand Prix, first held here in 1926.

"Given that this year’s Festival falls the week before the current British Grand Prix, it seems only fitting to have such a large F1 presence," he said.

The festival is being organised by Mercedes-Benz World and Brooklands Museum and the heritage of Brooklands will play a large part.

This year is the 41st reunion of the Brooklands Society and many cars that took part in the Double Twelve races in the 1920s and 30s will be on show in 2008.

Dennis: Best years of F1 are still to come

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Ron Dennis believes the best years of Formula One are yet to come and called for an evolutionary approach to the sport.

Speaking at the Motor Sport Business Forum in Bahrain, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes boss received a standing ovation, autosport.com reports.

"I passionately believe that the most glorious chapters of Formula One history are yet to come," he said.

"For F1 to continue to thrive in the way it has thrived all these years, we’ll need rules that foster freedom of entrepreneurship, but we’ll also need rules that encourage close and competitive racing," he explained.

He said that rule changes often bring increases in costs and making changes to the rules at a lower cost was a way to benefit teams who "are less able to meet those cost increases".

"Yet we must change the rules, because the world is changing. But, because we also need regulatory stability, our rule changes must be evolutionary, not revolutionary," he added.

But Dennis also said that the sport had to take a lead in environmental issues and "spread awareness of environmental messages".

Sir Stirling Moss and Lewis Hamilton to appear at ‘The Double Twelve’

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Lewis Hamilton and Sir Stirling Moss will be making driving appearances at this year’s Brooklands Motoring Festival.

‘The Double Twelve’ festival takes place on June 28th to 29th in Weybridge and will feature the two racing drivers as well as a display from the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows Display Team.

"Brooklands was the birthplace of circuit motor-racing as we know it today and witnessed countless world records being made after its opening in 1907," said Peter O’Halloran, managing director of Mercedes-Benz World.

"It was therefore extremely fitting for us to welcome key figures on the current circuit such as Lewis Hamilton and racing legend Sir Stirling Moss," he added.

The main event of the occasion is ‘The Double Twelve’ - a series of driving tests which will be judged by a select panel of experts.

Modern handling circuits and the notorious Test Hill will be taken on by competitors as they drive some of the best cars from the 20th Century.

"The battle for the Double Twelve trophies will take into account beauty, preparation and condition as well as performance and driving skill. It is this combination of disciplines which will make the event exciting for competitors and spectators alike," said Allan Winn, director of the Brooklands Museum.
