Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé – a rave review

November 30th, 2011

A few months ago we ran a competition in association with Auto Express, evo magazine and Octane, giving you the chance to win a fabulous Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé for an extended three week period, review it and then have the article published afterwards.

Well as you can imagine, the response to the competition was overwhelming. But after much deliberation, the panel managed to whittle it down to two lucky winners – part-time racing driver Rebecca Jackson, and IT specialist Mike Knee.

A few weeks have since passed, and it looks like our would-be reviewers have been flat out. Not only putting their respective Coupés to the test – but posing for the camera, writing and filming reviews with the help of the Auto Express road test team, and if the truth be known, probably doing a bit of showing off too!

Their reviews have now been posted online. So now it’s up to you. We’d like you to help us decide who should be crowned champion of champions, by voting for your favourite review.

The reviews will also be published in top motoring magazines Auto Express, evo and Octane, as well as featuring in iGizmo, evo on iPad and Padder – so keep your eyes peeled.

If you want to experience the C-Class Coupé for yourself – contact your local

Japanese Grand Prix – Race Review

October 10th, 2011

Yesterday’s Japanese Grand Prix in was a race that saw Sebastian Vettel crowned World Champion but despite his victory there were many positives for those involved with the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team too.  Michael Schumacher finished in sixth place coming from eighth position whilst Nico Rosberg came from the back row of the grid to finish in 10th place.

In the fourth consecutive race to see the Mercedes SLS AMG safety car deployed, there were a total of 65 pit stops throughout the race with just nine under 21 seconds – five of which were by MERCEDES GP PETRONAS.

Team Principal, Ross Brawn said: “The car performed well throughout the race, our strategies were right for both cars, and the pit crew produced fantastic stops – we have performed strongly all year in the pits, and today our stops won us places, particularly for Nico during the safety car period when he jumped two cars.”

Reflecting on his performance Rosberg said “I had fun out there with a few nice overtaking manoeuvres. This is definitely one of the toughest tracks for overtaking so starting from the back of the grid meant that I had a pretty tough job.”

Schumacher was also clearly happy with his performance “We maximised our potential of the car, and managed to put in a good race today. The team did a great job the whole weekend in finding performance and transforming it into the race. I think there was not more to expect and achieve. The pit stops were perfectly timed and everything worked out according to plan.”

Heaping praise on the New World Champion Sebastian Vettel, Schumacher added “I would like to congratulate Sebastian and his team who have been exceptional the whole year. It is extremely emotional to see him win the Championship again – I am very happy for him and even a little bit proud.”

DTM Valencia – New Champion Crowned

October 4th, 2011

Mercedes-Benz racing driver Bruno Spengler missed out on his chance to clinch victory in this season’s DTM championship as Audi driver Martin Tomczyk sealed the championship with a third place finish.

Mercedes-Benz driver, Spengler narrowly failed to clinch victory for the second year in a row after a close finale saw him defeated in 2010. Spengler finished the penultimate race in seventh position and after the race admitted, “We didn’t lose the title today, we already lost too many points in the previous races. We have been fighting hard, but we simply couldn’t do more today.”

Tomczyk wrapped up the 2011 DTM title in Valencia finishing behind race winner Mattias Ekström and second-placed Portuguese driver Filipe Albuquerque. With 64 points to Spengler’s 51 in the DTM driver’s standings Tomczyk has been crowned champion with one race to go in Hockenheim on the weekend of October 21st, where the Audi driver will receive the crystal champion’s trophy.

The Unsung Hero of Formula One

September 22nd, 2011

In years gone by one particular driver and his car have begun to quietly affect the outcome of Singapore’s F1TM races and has been doing so largely unnoticed – we think it’s time the pair got the recognition they deserved.

Only two driver’s can boast to have lead more laps than the mystery pair, and that’s Fernando Alonso (93 laps) and Lewis Hamilton (57 laps) respectively.

The pair are in fact Bernd Mayländer and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG – F1TM’s Official Safety Car.

They may not be going down in racing history but the SLS AMG Safety Car has actually been deployed in every single one of the three Singapore races since 2008, so far accumulating some 20 leading laps.

In fact in terms of percentages both Singapore and Korea have had a 100% record of Safety Car deployment – although in the case of Korea, this is calculated on the basis of a single race.

So we think it’s a pretty safe bet that you’ll be seeing the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG this weekend. Some facts about the Official F1™ Safety Car:

  • Since the start of the 2001 season, the Safety Car has led almost 2,500 km – equivalent to approximately eight Grand Prix distances.
  •

  • The season which saw the most Safety Car deployments was 2010, when it appeared 21 times at 12 races, for a total of 7.8% of the racing laps; in total, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG led a total of 87 laps for 452.3 km, equivalent to one-and-a-half race distances.
  •

  • The seasons with the fewest deployments were 2001 and 2002, both of which saw just five Safety Car periods. In 2001, Safety Car periods accounted for 2.6% of all racing laps, while in 2002 this figure decreased to 2.3%

Goodwood Revival Review

September 19th, 2011

Goodwood Revival really is an event like no other. Once through the admission gates the ‘modern world’ is forgotten as you become enveloped in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s where Goodwood Motor Circuit used to be ranked as Britain’s leading racing venue.

With the circuit restored and unchanged from its heyday, authenticity is key to the event’s organisers – and the crowd didn’t fail to do their part with an imaginative array of period attire on display.

The eclectic mix of classic cars and motorcycles that took to the race track to compete throughout the weekend created a truly exhilarating spectacle. The crowd were left in awe by the diverse range of models competing in a host of races which also saw classic motorcycles take to the track and aviation displays such as the spitfires take to the sky.

The combination of classic cars and crowd participation ensure that Goodwood Revival is undoubtedly the biggest and best historic motor racing event of the year.
