The New B-Class: Outstanding environmental credentials

February 1st, 2012

Awarded the prestigious ISO Environmental Certificate for ecological compatibility, the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class gets the green light in more ways than one.

Packed with intelligent energy-saving features, the new B-Class in the guise of the
B 180 produces 16 percent less CO2 emissions than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is also reduced up to 19 percent, thanks to a combination of BlueEFFICIENCY technologies including optimisation of the powertrain, energy management, aerodynamics, tyres with less rolling resistance and weight reduction measures.

But to achieve such outstanding environmental credentials, every detail of ecological relevance must be documented. Mercedes-Benz analyses each model throughout its entire life cycle – from production, right through to recycling at the end of its service.

Incorporating 75 components produced with the partial use of high-quality recycled plastics, plus 21 components containing natural materials, the B 180 already meets the recycling level of 95 percent by weight, mandatory as of 1 January 2015.

In addition to reprocessing of vehicle components such as starter battery housings, bumper panels from the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System (MeRSy) and production waste from cockpit units – the B 180 represents innovation at the forefront of its market segment.

On the road price from £21,290. Contact your local Mercedes-Benz Retailer for more information or to book a test drive.

Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS – The best of both worlds

January 23rd, 2012

Scheduled for European production* in 2014, the Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS adds an all-purpose battery-powered model with Range Extender to our portfolio of electric vehicles.

Utilising a powerful lithium-ion battery pack located in a false floor at the rear called the ‘Energy Space’, the Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS offers up to 62 emission-free miles in all-electric mode. However, with a total range of 373 miles thanks to its additional three-cylinder combustion engine – this plug-in series hybrid ultimately combines the best of both worlds.

In simple terms, there are two operating modes that depend on how much charge status the battery has. When it has sufficient energy the vehicle runs on electric power alone, generating a peak output of 100 kW and a continuous output of 70 kW. When the battery charge drops below a certain limit the petrol engine kicks in.

The battery can be charged using any standard domestic power outlet or at a public charging station, as well as by the dual performing combustion engine when driving at low vehicle speeds.

The electric motor and combustion engine interact so intelligently that the drive unit is able to select the most fuel-efficient mode for every driving situation in a fraction of a second. Coupled with an impressive zero to 62 mph in 11 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph in either mode – the Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS is firmly on course to become the electric all-rounder of the future.

S-Class holds on to seven year reign as Best Luxury Car at the 2012 What Car? Awards

January 12th, 2012

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car for the seventh consecutive year in a row at the 2012 What Car? Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday, 11 January.

Chas Hallett, Editor in Chief at What Car? Magazine recognised the amazing achievement and added that ‘the S-Class still has the measure of its rivals on ability and build quality, and it retains its value better to boot’.

Superb mechanical and aerodynamic refinement and the sublime cabin of the S-Class impressed the judges who cited that ‘it’s simply a staggering piece of engineering’.

We know we have a great car in the S-Class and are delighted that What Car? recognise this too. Winning once is great but seven wins really asserts the S-Class as the pinnacle of luxurious motoring at its best. Our flagship saloon has continued to impress since we launched it in 2005 but we haven’t rested on our laurels, since last years win we have introduced stop/start to the S-Class range which has had a positive impact on both fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions’ said Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK Limited.

The S 350 BlueTEC now returns 45.6 mpg on the combined cycle, an improvement of ten per cent and emits 164 g/km of CO2 which is a seven per cent reduction.

Since its launch in 2005 over 440,000 S-Class have been sold worldwide and over13,800 of these were sold in the UK. The S 350 BlueTEC is available on the road from £60,605.00 and- £64,605.00 for the S 350 BlueTEC LWB.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY: our first DIESEL-POWERED Roadster

November 23rd, 2011

The diesel engine has come a long way since Mercedes-Benz introduced the world’s very first diesel car back in 1936. So much so, that 75 years on, we’re proud to launch our new SLK 250 CDI – the first ever Mercedes-Benz Roadster powered by a diesel engine.

Combining light-footed sportiness with supreme comfort, the SLK 250 CDI hits 62 mph in 6.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 151 mph – all thanks to its twin-turbo 2.1 litre diesel engine which delivers 204 hp and packs a healthy 500 Nm of torque, making this the most powerful diesel model in its segment.

Added to exemplary environmental credentials, such as ECO start/stop as standard, a combined fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 132 g/km – the diesel SLK possesses the power of a sports car, but boasts the efficiency of a small family car.

Equipped with the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission, this stunning two-seater Roadster is available with three different suspension systems and alternative versions of the hallmark vario-roof, including the panoramic option with Magic Sky Control which changes dark glass to transparent at the touch of a button.

There is little doubt that the SLK 250 CDI, at the pinnacle of its sector, represents a whole new definition of diesel vehicle, ushering an era that both challenges our preconceptions and begs the ultimate question – where will it take us next?

Mercedes-Benz has always been at the forefront of technological innovations in the automobile industry and the SLK 250 CDI is no exception – the first ever Mercedes-Benz diesel powered Roadster is redefining our preconceptions of diesel cars.

Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé shines in Auto Express’ Performance Car of the Year Awards

November 4th, 2011

The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé scooped second prize in this year’s

Auto Express Performance Car of the Year Awards. The C 63 AMG Coupé beat off fierce competition from 30 other manufacturers including; Audi, Jaguar, McLaren, Porsche and Aston Martin to take second place in Auto Express Performance Car of the Year 2011, and was only just beaten to the top spot by the three-times-as-expensive Ferrari 458 Italia.

The judging for the Performance Car of the Year 2011 was based on the car that delivered the most thrilling and memorable drive, not just the fastest time around the track.

Auto Express said that the C 63 fully deserved its podium place: “With its sleek looks, spine-tingling soundtrack and nimble chassis, the C 63 is arguably AMG’s best effort yet”.

They also commented “The C 63 AMG’s engine is immense, with the power to transform this comfortable and luxurious coupé in to a bellowing hot rod” and their final verdict was “Only the brilliance of the winner stops the remarkable C 63 from taking overall honours”.
