Schumacher eyes podium places
March 25, 2011

Mercedes GP PETRONAS driver Michael Schumacher has spoken of his excitement ahead of the start of the Formula One season following a series of successful testing sessions during the winter.

Schumacher, 42, struggled to compete with the sports leading lights on his return in 2010. However, he has claimed that the improvements made to the Mercedes GP PETRONAS car should ensure he is more competitive this year.

Speaking to autosport.com, the German said: “Mercedes has done a huge step forward with this year’s car, it is a very performance-orientated car and it has paid out.

“This weekend it is up to us to prove it, and we have a good opportunity to prove good things.”

The motor racing icon stated his ambition for the 2011 season is to compete for podium finishes, but added it is unrealistic to expect to fight for the championship this year.

The Formula One season begins this weekend in Melbourne, Australia.
